FABRIC SILKSCREEN

Inspired by "Odawara; sakawagawa hoko watashi hakoneyama enbo” (Odawara; Distant view of the Hakone mountains from the ferry across the Sakawa River), by Utagawa Hiroshige.

The separation of the figures from the landscape in the specific work made me think of the way that we distance ourselves from nature, or think of ourselves as above the animals that live in the wild. One parallel that I reflected on was the interaction of monkeys in Hakone, in the outdoor hot springs, and the Japanese cultural practice of bathing together in onsen, or bath houses.

This pattern explores the merging of these interactions; of monkeys and humans, both inside and outside.
